Historical Revisionism: Civil War Historian Featured Speaker at Oxford Pachyderm Luncheon

Starke Miller

On the heels of the violent protests in Charlottesville, the nation is in a heated debate over Civil War monuments. Some seek to remove Confederate statues in public spaces while others want to preserve the statues claiming the monuments have historical value.

The Oxford Pachyderm Club will address this issue at its next luncheon meeting Thursday, August 24.

Civil War historian Starke Miller is the scheduled featured speaker.

“I greatly look forward to coming to speak to the members of the Pachyderm Club in Oxford to share my 27 years of knowledge, and facts, about the Confederate statue on the Oxford Square and the one on the University campus,” said Miller.

The Civil War included 11 southern states, which seceded from the Union. Most Confederate monuments are located in southern states.

“I am amazed by the lack of facts, on both sides, much of the time,” said Miller. |As a Southerner, or an Ole Miss Alumni, or student, if you do not know your history, then it is easy to give it up, or have it taken away from you.”

Miller moved to Oxford over a year ago in order to write fully factual, fully footnoted books on The University Greys, Oxford and University during the War, The University of Mississippi Class of 1861, Jeremiah Gage – one University Grey in detail, Ole Miss students and alumni at the battle of Shiloh, as well as Ole Miss and Her Southern symbols.

“As the nation reels from the horrific violence in Charlottesville, and identity politics is used to divide our communities, it’s important to have civil discourse about our Civil War history,” said Russ Jones, president of the Oxford Pachyderm Club. “Breaking the law and tearing down statues is not the best path as we seek understanding and healing.”

The Republican Party affiliated club will meet at the Oxford Conference Center from 11:30 to 1:00pm located at 103 Ed Perry Blvd, Oxford, MS. The cost is $20 per person for members and $22 for non-members. Reservations and payment can be made at OxfordPachyderm.com.
