Moorehead, MS — At least 16 people are dead after a military plane crashed in Mississippi.
The Marine Corps refueling plane went down yesterday in LeFlore County in the central part of the state.
The KC-130 plane, which is used as a refueling tanker, crashed after it, “experienced a mishap,” according to U.S. Marine Corps spokeswoman Captain Sarah Burns.
According to the FAA, the Marine Corps KC-130 departed from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in North Carolina. It went down in a soybean field about 85 miles north of Jackson in the Mississippi Delta.
Investigators say the ammunition-filled plane may have exploded in the air. Fiery debris was scattered for miles around the impact site.
